I have a new discovery---wheat berries!
Our branch has been on a food storage kick lately and so I ordered 56 cans of food storage. In those 56 cans, I ordered 6 cans of hard red wheat (about 37 pounds).
Now, I was beginning to panic because I obviously made an impulse purchase.
I asked myself, "What in the world am I going to do with all that wheat?!"
I don't have wheat grinder.
Huh...for that matter, I don't bake bread.
(That's just about all I know to do with wheat and I don't even do that!)
Okay, April, you can make this work. Phillip will not take you to the big "D" (and I don't mean Dallas) HA!
Sorry, I couldn't resist.
Anyway, one of the sisters at church made all of us a folder with a plethora of food storage information. I began to look through it and felt like there was some hope---wheat berries.
Then, when I went to church this Sunday, we got a sample of wheat and a recipe for wheat berries. Viola!
He hears my pleas and then answers me!
"April, you can make wheat berries!" a deep thunderous voice in my head said.
YAY!! I brought my 1 cup sample home and made wheat berries this morning.
I tasted them and they are flavorless.
But, wait....
How do I store them?
How long do they last?
What do I put them in?
How do we eat them?
Dag nab it!
Just when I thought I had acquired a "get out of jail free card" with my hubby, I fail again!
I began to panic.
Okay, April, the recipe says you can put one or two teaspoons in cereal. This stuff is flavorless. The kids won't mind too much that there is some brown funky balls in their fruit loops......right?
UGGGH!!
What to do?
What to do?
Okay, April, who gave this recipe to you? Maybe Nancy can tell you what to do.
Call her.
Oops, she is at work.
At a bank.
I can't call her. She works at a bank. What am I supposed to do? Call the bank and ask Nancy, "Hey girl. I don't mean to interrupt all the loan stuff you're doing, but I just made wheat berries. Now what do I do?"
No, April you can't call her.
But, my berries! I made wheat berries! I am being a good Molly Mormon!
Call her.
I pick up the phone and call.
(hee hee)
The phone rang and I asked politely for Nancy.
The phone transferred and Nancy answered.
Sorry, Nancy for calling you at work, but I made wheat berries and I don't know what to do with them.
She laughs................hard.
No humiliation felt..................honest.
Seriously, she was so nice. She told me that I could put them into anything. Meat loaf, veggies, even cake! Just store them in a tupperware container for up to two weeks in the fridge and add them to whatever I like. Since they are flavorless, they won't affect the flavor of anything.
YAY!! My kids are about to be overloaded with fiber and my hubby is not going to kill me for wasting money.
This is ridiculous, but I really was giddy.
(You may laugh now.)
I have been so stressed out over food storage and making sure that we have it. I know that one of the primary things that everyone always talks about having is wheat. So, this really was a HUGE thing for me.
I don't have a grinder for the wheat.
I don't make bread.
I don't can food or have a garden.
I really do have anxiety about not being able to "live off the land."
I feel ignorant to survival.
Do I get brownie points for wanting to learn. I wonder?
Well, I have conquered one thing----wheat berries! HA!
En guard! Take that Satan!
I am woman, hear me roar!
My next step, a wheat grinder and bread maker.
We will see, won't we.
Smooches and ciao!
